£2.99 for 6 bottles, how do we think this will go?

Another uncomplicated beer, does what it says on the tin.

First and Last Impressions

I'll be honest, I tried Lidl's Perlenbacher alcohol free beer a couple of years back, when I first went alcohol free, I thought it was ok , very sweet. I seem to remember it being hops, malt flavoured drink rather than an actual beer, I could be wrong but wasn't blown away. I also remember reading a review written at the time that said it used to be good until the recipe changed, so I was happy to try it again.

That and the fact this was very kindly donated by a colleague of my wife, that had heard I was starting this blog/review site. Thank you Mr J :)

Let's get into it - Open it up and whack it in a glass, it's a nice medium light amber colour, nice fizzy pour, the head dissipates very quickly and so no time to really get a scent from it, but I had a sniff anyway - was light hop, malty smell, a little bit sweet and maybe had a tinge of acidity but very mild and pleasant. Mouthfeel is like a normal, regular beer/lager, nice amount of fizz. The flavour is light and crisp, non offensive, reminds me of a standard European lager, like those little French stubby beers your parents used to get , something like that, but without that bite.

The finish is crisp, clean and mellow, maybe a tiny hint of bitterness, it's altogether pleasant but not memorable.

Info

Ingredients: Water, Barley, Malt, then it has flavourings - Hops extract, Citric acid. That makes me think it's flavoured like a beer rather than being one.

Other nutrition info is scarce, even on the bottle.

from what I have found its 23kcal and 1.4g sugar per 100ml

The Final Score

It's an ok "beer", served ice cold it's drinkable and pleasant and I would probably drink it again. So if you are looking for a cheap European style crisp lager to take to a BBQ or gathering, or to sit back and have a breather from doing some DIY this is an ok choice, but there are better. I must add at £2.99 for 6 330ml bottles it's not bad on the wallet, but you do get what you pay for.

To sum up, its a simple non fussy "beer", the flavours are not complicated and it tastes ok, I didn't get any fruitiness, there is some bitterness, acidity and sweetness. it's not a memorable flavour but not horrible. it's a plain easy drinker.
